Assad inherited an old system.
That the system was not perfect is clear - where is a perfect system?
Assad tried to improve the economic system; for example some neoliberal 'reforms' were attempted - leading to some unhappiness - as neoliberal reforms tend to do.
Assad tried to improve the political system; recently there were elections and political reforms; well over half the people voted - despite the opposition calling for a boycott. Download a video or the transcript of Assad discussing such things; decide for yourself: Is this what a monster looks/sounds like?
The point here is, that Assad tried to play the game and improve Syria.
But in contrast, some, mostly young people, thought 'life could be better' - on the Hollywood-dream model brought to them via TV (mostly devised & broadcast by non-disinterested parties). They must have learned the characteristic double-two-finger 'revolution' gesture somewhere.
Then, when the 'Arab Spring' came to Syria, long-stored plans were put into effect.
Externally supported subversives infiltrated genuine 'democracy' movements, and some peaceful demonstrations were turned ugly.
Assad's forces tried to restore peace, and the trap had been sprung.
Now the 'activists' are being armed (US-proxies Saudi Arabia and Qatar) and assisted by invading mercenaries.
Thanks to the NYT, we know that the CIA is assisting, with 'non-lethal aid' (or so they say, but who in this entire story is *not* lying?) 'Non-lethal aid' means communications equipment (satellite phones, PC-communications (Skype, video-uploads)), intel-advice (satellite photos = where best to attack the govt. and/or people), training and who knows what other etc.s.
The external interferers *do not care* how many people are slaughtered, also not by whom, although the US has looong experience in developing the El-Salvador option = death squads.

When a 'revolution' is hijacked, when mercenaries flood in, it is *not* a civil war anymore (assuming it ever was - so-called 'peaceful' protesters lose all legitimacy when they turn violent - and start killing). For proof, look to Palestine; not so long before UNGA181 there were very few Jews in Palestine, then came waves of self-claimed Jewish immigrants, often illegally (the UK had tried to stop the flood). If the number of alien-arrivals is high enough, it is no longer immigration but an alien invasion. The point is, that when the Zionist terrorists (obviously superior in both numbers and arms) attacked the hapless ELO/Os, driving the ELO/Os off and subsequently improperly alienating the ELO/Os' land and property (Plan Dalet, Deir Yassin massacre etc.), the hasbarah-ists claimed that the Jews had won a 'civil war.' Given that hasbarah-ists are among the filthiest liars on the planet, as soon as they claim something, you may assume the diametric opposite is true.
It is not known to me how many 'rotten apples' (= US-sponsored death-squads, say) it would need, but there are obviously enough in Syria to perpetrate the outrages we are seeing reported in the MSM+PFBCs, i.e. the analogue of an hourly 'Aurora' and a daily 'Utøya' or two - in size, scope, frequency and outright brutality.
To claim that these outrages are being perpetrated by Assad-related forces is bizarre - how could Assad possibly benefit by 'killing his own people?' Ergo, any claims of 'Assad did it' must be (99%) lying PRopaganda. Having said that, accidents - or traps - may happen.
Yet that 'Assad did it' is the exact claim made daily, hourly, by our (corrupt&venal) MSM+PFBCs.
US, Zs, F+UK and NATO have form = they've done the same or similar successively to Palestine (Zs, pre/post-1947 down to 'current moment'), Afghanistan (US, 2001+), Iraq (B, B & H + CoWs) & Libya (F+UK and NATO) in the recent past. There too, the US+ does not care how many they kill, or cause to have killed (when the killing can be carried out by local proxies, consciously in US-service or not). What counts is the number killed - but since Viet Nam, the US doesn't do body-counts. We know from the Lancet that they stopped counting after 600,000 deaths in Iraq. The true figure may approximate 1.4mio+, with ~2mio internally displaced and ~2mio outright fled. Repeating the point; the US doesn't care how many they kill, nor the Zs (just look and see how often they slaughter their neighbours, down through the years), now F+UK and NATO have caught the US-disease and don't care how many they kill either.

Sooo, Q: Who's to blame for the rape of Syria?
A1: The Assad regime, vulnerable by not being perfect.
A2: The so-called 'peaceful' protesters IF it was they who turned violent - and start killing.
A3: The fomenters and subversives, externally instigated, the finger-prints of the US&/Zs are all over it, then those providing arms, and the criminal, murdering mercenaries.
A4: The rogue-regimes, not only of the perpetrators, but all the SQSHsO who offer assistance, support or even merely non-resistance. (Silence helps the criminals too.)
A5: The corrupt&venal MSM+PFBCs, who transmit and often *actively assist* the lying narratives spewing out of our TVs.
A5: The churches; they should be absolutely raging, condemning the externally instigated/invading murderers and calling for peace - but all we get from the churches is a deafening silence.
A6: The people, for allowing themselves to be ppp-dd'd.
